Bedourie’s Simpson Desert Oasis Roadhouse features a general store, fuel supplies (no auto gas), tavern, restaurant, caravan park, motel units and cabins. The motel units are air-conditioned with telephone facilities and cabins are self-contained with air-conditioning. The Simpson Desert Oasis Caravan Park offers powered and un-powered sites and also shared and en suite amenities. Laundry facilities are also available.

The Restaurant is open for early for Breakfast until 1.30pm and again from 6.00pm to 8.30pm.
Meals are available for breakfast, lunch and dinner with takeaways available.

Bedourie, Oasis in the Desert

Situated on the edge of the Simpson Desert and in the heart of the Channel Country in southwestern Queensland, Australia, this modern town is headquarters of the vast Diamantina Shire which covers 6.3% of Queensland, or twice the size of Denmark.

The major industries are beef production and tourism, with mining exploration continuing. Visitors to Bedourie always remark on the town’s green lawns and native gardens, shrubs and trees, which are the vivid expression of its motto “Oasis in the Desert”.

Local attractions include the lawn cemetery, the heritage-listed Mud Hut, the Outback Golf Course, the magnificent Hot Artesian Spa and Pool Complex, Visitor Centre and the Medical Clinic. Outside town is Cuttaburra Crossing, a renowned wetland with prolific birdlife; Carcoory Ruins, which are listed by the National Trust; and Diamantina National Park, just named one of Australia’s top ten National Parks.

Bedourie is a modern town situated on a sand dune over looking the Eyre creek flood plain.  The town has doubled in size since 1990 and now boasts many new houses and modern facilities.  A feature of the town is its lush green grass and abundance of trees and shrubs, an oasis in the desert.

The Diamantina Shire Council Chamber was moved from Birdsville to Bedourie in 1953.  It remains the administration centre for the Shire.

The local Royal Hotel was built in the 1880’s of adobe bricks and is still operating today with little change in appearance except replacing the thatched roof with iron.  There is motel accommodation and a licensed restaurant. The postal agency is situated inside the hotel.

Bedourie is also home of the famous Bedourie camp oven, a lightweight metal dish with a matching lid that can also be used for a pan.  Following this trend a swag has now been named after the town.

The local racetrack comes alive three times a year: a gymkhana (last weekend in June) a camel race (2nd weekend in July) and the Bedourie races meeting (2nd weekend in September).

The Simpson Desert Oasis provides a service for fuel, supermarket, motel, cabins, caravan park and a licensed restaurant.

There is also an Aquatic Centre featuring an artesian spa.

 

The Bedourie Aquatic Centre was built to incorporate the natural clear water coming directly from the town’s original bore head which was drilled in 1905 to a depth of 400m.

The Bedourie Aquatic Centre was opened in November 2000. The complex features a 25m swimming pool, a wading pool and a 22 person hot artesian spa reaching temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius. The complex is open daily from 6am to 8pm (September 1 through to end of February) and 7am – 7pm (March 1 through to August 31) and is accessible by paying a fully refundable key deposit.
