RainBow Beach..Inskip Camping

The aboriginal name of Carah was once given to Inskip Point. Early this century Inskip Point was the original settlement in the area and boasted a small school to cater for the children of the local timber workers and the Inskip Light Keeper.
Some of the area between Inskip and Rainbow Beach was mined for rutile, zircon and ilmenite between 1965 and 1971.

Inskip Point some 7-8 kms to the north of Rainbow Beach township, is now predominantly known for its Barge service to Fraser Island and its picturesque camping

You need a permit which you can buy at the Forestry Office just out of town or from the Barge booking office or Surf Shop at Rainbow Beach Township. Cost is $5.60 a person. You can park where you wish but 2 camping sites are recommended for 2WD…I went to the second one after the Parking area…all other areas were too sandy for my van..

There are 12 toilet blocks in the area with  washing hands sink, where water can be used for washing the black sand off feet as well. At low tide, the sand gets very hot because of the metal content in it and feet get very black.

There are many fishermen with surf rods catching fish here…I saw a huge trevally caught by a fishermen at the beach adjacent to the camp. at Sunset the fishermen line the water with their long surf-rods waiting for fish for their dinner…

Birds hover above the fishing men or wait in the shallows for fish

Above eagles and terns lazily ride the sky circling the area where the fishermen are

In the morning the edges of the water are lined with jelly fish stranded by the outgoing tide. I saw one stinging portuguese man of war…

It is very beautiful here…campers swim in the safe and shallow waters, but mostly the beach is totally deserted this time of the year because of the heat during the day and the midges at Dawn and in the evening. Most of the campers are older Nomads traveling as a couple or with another couple in their own van. There are older men on their own, and backpackers who come in late and leave early to dodge paying the camping fee I was told…By 7pm the camp is mostly asleep and dark, except for the Backpacker vans and cars driving  in the check what areas are free, and the flickering light of the toilet goers. This beach is the 4WD beach driving area, and cars enter from the camping parks and drive on the beach.

It is also the place where the barge Takes 4WD vehicles across to Fraser Island across the water. You can see cars driving the sand of Fraser island from the camping areas.
