Hervey Bay Queensland

Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay, a coastal city in southern Queensland, is widely known as a site for observing humpback whales. Whale-watching boats operate during the July to November migration season. It’s also a hub for tours to nearby Fraser Island, which has beaches and features a rainforest habitat for dingoes and other wildlife. A waterfront esplanade links the city’s marina with beaches offering calm waters for swimming.

I booked into Scarness Caravan Park in Hervey Bay on the beach. Because they are renovating, site fees were reduced to affordable, and I stayed a week enjoying the closeness to the beach and the beautiful location. The city is situated approximately 290 kilometres (180 mi) or 3½ hours’ highway drive north of the state capital, Brisbane. It is located on the bay of the same name open to the Coral Sea between the Queensland mainland and nearby K’gari (Fraser Island). The local economy relies on tourism which is based primarily around whale watching in Platypus Bay

Tourists are well catered for with accommodation ranging from Backpacker to exclusive waterfront rental apartments in resort settings. Many retired people come to this area, but there is also the families in the caravan parks enjoying the safe beach as well as the tourist attractions such as the slide and Side shows. There are many restaurants, and hotels and clubs with poker machines and the TAB. This area has been hit by Covid and the bars and clubs were not as busy as they used to be and the streets are not overfull of tourists. Some of the attractions were open…the Museum and the Aquarium welcomed travellers, and we also had lunch at the Aquarium which was sadly almost empty and the Greek restaurant on the foreshore.
